SATLANTIS announces the launch of NOX: Night vision Optical eXplorer, a new night-vision project funded by the European Space Agency – ESA.
The NOX project aims to push the boundaries of Earth observation under very low-light conditions by developing new, state-of-the-art imaging capabilities designed to deliver high-quality images even in scenarios where conventional optical systems reach their limits. This capability will enable progress toward more continuous Earth observation, regardless of lighting conditions.
NOX builds on SATLANTIS’s expertise in developing high-resolution optical instruments and on our commitment to driving the development of sovereign European technologies for the next generation of Earth observation systems. The project also marks a new chapter in SATLANTIS’s history of innovation and strengthens its collaboration with ESA in the development of advanced space imaging capabilities.
“Thank you, Josef Aschbacher, for your confidence. Once more our FlexSats will be reinforced, with a visible capability to observe overnight. This iSIM night channel development, in collaboration with ESA, will soon complement the thermal night-observation capabilities of CASPER and SPIRIT providing the most complete market offer for night observation” said Juan Tomás Hernani, CEO of SATLANTIS.

This project represents another important step in our collaboration with ESA and in strengthening Europe’s independent capabilities in advanced space-based imaging.
Observing the Earth at Night: An Innovation
NOX incorporates an innovative capability for optical observation under very low-light conditions, thanks to high-sensitivity, low-noise detectors in the SATLANTIS telescopes; this will make it possible to obtain images at night, expanding observation capabilities beyond daylight hours.
This technology enables a wide range of Earth observation applications and opens up new possibilities across areas such as defense and security, urban area monitoring, detection of non-cooperative vessels, search and rescue, emergency response, infrastructure monitoring, and environmental change detection, for instance, expanding the value of Earth observation data and facilitating the development of new high-value-added products and services.
With NOX, SATLANTIS is contributing to the development of a new generation of observation capabilities under low-light conditions, strengthening Europe’s position in the emerging night observation market and easing new opportunities for European operators and technology providers.
We are proud to contribute to a future where Earth Observation does not stop when the Sun goes down!
